By the middle of the 21st Century at least half of all the ten billion of us will live in urban areas, most of which are not prepared to cope with such growth.

The Sustainable Urban Living Institute US (SULIUS) seeks to test modes of planning, construction, manufacturing, maintenance, distribution, equity and other aspects of urban life and to support projects designed to assess scientifically the likelihood that economic activities can be sustained into the future without damage to their inhabitants, their cities, or the environment.

To that end, we host symposia that sponsor the study of innovative private and public activities designed to provide goods and services in ways that can be operated continuously. We work with businesses and agencies to develop best practices appropriate to their goals, always aware that each of our personal freedoms is constrained by the presence of others, whose personal rights are equal to our own, and of the larger society, which must keep our activities in balance with neighbors and nature.

Collaborations

We also are affiliated with small, local non-profit demonstration businesses that provide us with test cases and income (or assist local organizations to do so). Some are listed on this page, and others appear in our Directory, including a non-profit indoor gardening and training organization, a restaurant chain featuring fresh, local, nutritious food, a recycling management enterprise, and others. All are focused on small, family or neighborhood scale business that keeps money circulating locally and supporting continuous renewal.
